The ongoing rivalry between the Malas and Madigas, two sub-castes within the Scheduled Castes (SCs) of Telangana, has once again surfaced with the recent announcement of candidates for the upcoming general elections.

Notably, according to the 2011 census, the Madiga population in the combined regions of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana comprised over 48 percent of the Scheduled Caste (SC) demographic, showcasing their significant influence and contribution to the region’s social fabric. 


Notably, according to data from the 2001 census, Malas accounted for 41.6 percent (51.39 lakh) of the Scheduled Castes population in the former state of Andhra Pradesh, encompassing the current state of Telangana.
